Sketch

In one sentence

A sketch is an optional picture you attach to the prompt. It shows the look you want. The Game Boy does not display that picture. It displays tiles.

The detail

The sketch is stored with the first build and, on a public game, shown beside the prompt. People use it for a character, a title, or a rough level. A photo of a sketch on paper works as well as a drawing file.

What reaches the screen is a redraw at 160 by 144, in four shades, made of 8 by 8 tiles. Fine lines and small text in the sketch disappear in that grid. If the picture is the thing you want players to see, say so in the prompt as a title screen, and expect it to be rebuilt, not pasted.

A game with no sketch is normal. The sentence is enough to start a build.

Worth keeping

  • The sketch is a reference, and it is optional
  • Public games can show the sketch next to the prompt
  • The screen gets tiles in four shades, not the original picture

Questions

Do I have to upload a drawing?

No. A sentence is enough.

Will the title screen be my drawing, pixel for pixel?

No. It is redrawn into the Game Boy's tiles and four shades.

Who can see the sketch?

Anyone, on a public game. A private game keeps it off the library.
